This set of Northern Wainwrights involves a long day of two halves!

It begins with some quite steep climbs, on typical grass-covered Northern Fells. Then some hard work on the "off-piste" direct route to Souther Fell. By this stage you've done most of the big climbing for the day.

After steep paths down Souther Fell, the route levels out with some road, to Great and Little Mell.
The final stretch of the route to Great Mell seems to be commonly used, but is actually along a disused rifle range. The only alternative is a lengthy stretch of road skirting Great Mell to the South-West,

Navigating to Gowbarrow starts with more road to Todgill. The traditional route then went up Todgill Syke, but is no longer easy as the landowner has fenced off areas for deer. The alternative here is to continue along the road, cutting up the hill before Norman Crag. There is a high wall north of the fell top, but there is a gate at the position shown on the gpx route.

Then back to a flat route, initially on road. Turning north across Sandbeds Moss is a relief, but the route to Lobbs would be very boggy after rain.

If you feel these later hills are not "proper" fells, you can always relax at the pub in Dockray for some light refreshment.
