Some people talk of avoiding this area of the Western Wainwright fells, thinking it is simply a "big flat bog". Not true, as this route shows.
It starts with a quick trip up High Rigg, one of the small, stand-alone peaks, with its view down Thirlmere. Then some careful navigating, much of it off-piste, to get to the top of Walla Crag. The key near Snipe's How is to find the gate before the bend in the wall, then to turn south-west to find another gate.
After Walla Crag scale two summits before reaching High Tove. (OK, that section is not the most exciting part of the Lakes, and it can be quite boggy.)
Turn West and descend to Watendlath Farm. When seeking Grange Fell, avoid a prominent path that leads to Brundt Fell and pass north of that summit. Leaving Grange Fell, start by going directly South and then contour round Brundt Fell to a wall junction. Descend to Puddingstone Bank and continue along a decent path to Great Crag.
After Dock Tarn there is a path leading South-West. Countour round the side of Coldbarrow Fell before climbing gradually to Ullscarf. Armboth Fell needs some careful navigating as new deer fences have been erected, but are not shown on the maps. Finally, Raven Crag, one of Wainwright's odder summits, though you may have a good view down Thirlmere.
